چکیده

Mesh compression is an important task in geometry processing. It exploits geometric coherence of the data to reduce the amount of space needed to store a surfacemesh. Most techniques perform compression employing a uniform data quantization over the whole surface. Research in shape perception, however, suggests that there are parts of the mesh that are visually more relevant than others. We present a novel technique that performs an adaptive compression of a static mesh, using the largest part of the bit budget on the relevant vertices while saving space on encoding the less significant ones. Our technique can be easily adapted to work with any perception-based error metric. The experiments show that our adaptive approach is at least comparable with other state-of-the-art techniques, while in some cases it provides a significant reduction of the bitrate of up to 15%. Additionally, our approach providesmuch faster decoding times than comparable perception-motivated compression algorithms. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Perceptual Metrics for Static and Dynamic Triangle Meshes

Almost all mesh processing procedures cause some more or less visible changes in the appearance of objects represented by polygonal meshes. In many cases, such as mesh watermarking, simplification or lossy compression, the objective is to make the change in appearance negligible, or as small as possible, given some other constraints. Measuring the amount of distortion requires taking into accou...

Valence-Driven Connectivity Encoding for 3D Meshes

In this paper, we propose a valence-driven, single-resolution encoding technique for lossless compression of triangle mesh connectivity. Building upon a valence-based approach pioneered by Touma and Gotsman 22, we design a new valence-driven conquest for arbitrary meshes that always guarantees smaller compression rates than the original method. Furthermore, we provide a novel theoretical entrop...

Triangular meshes are widely used as primary representation of surface models for networked gaming and for complex interactive design in manufacturing. Accurate triangulation of a surface with sharp features (highly varying curvatures, holes) may require an extremely large number of triangles. Fast transmission of such large triangle meshes is critical to many applications that interactively ma...

Multiresolution Representations for Surfaces Meshes

We describe a method for constructing multi resolution models (MRM) of complex triangle meshes and show how these representations can be used to create view dependent adaptive approximations of triangle meshes on the y with guaranteed approximation error. We use a modiied one-sided Hausdorr distance as a geometrically meaningful error value between the original and the simpliied mesh. Since thi...
